Chapter 13

There weren’t many people alive who had seen a yeti’s undercarriage, and there was a reason for that. It meant you had enough weight coming your way to grind you into a thin paste that would make vegemite look enticing.

I scrambled backward, shouting a warning at my children. “Back, now!”

The yeti struck the asphalt hard enough to splinter it. Its first blow swatted Alasdair as he tried to sidestep the creature and sent my mentor flying.

The abominable snowman came for me on the reverse swing. I ducked under the colossal meaty palm as it sailed over my head.

I was feeling awfully proud of my reflexes until the yeti lunged forward and punched me with the other fist.

Pain was everywhere. My wind was driven from my lungs as I flew backward so fast I barely realized I was moving before I hit the ground, rolling ankles over earlobes. The rough asphalt scraped my palms and tore at my jeans.

If I lived to see him, my chiropractor was going to lose his mind. Right now, I felt like I’d been thrown out of a wrestling ring by The Rock. If there was a single vertebra left where it was meant to be, it certainly didn’t feel like it.

A pained groan escaped my lips as I rolled to a stop.

All around us, Atlantis roared to life like a demented nightmare. The Vortex started spinning wildly as the passengers were yanked and spun in a hellish twist.

The Trident launched its payload of patrons skyward once more. The Leviathan’s rollercoaster cars circled somewhere overhead, the coaster rattling and bouncing about as it careened around tight corners. I could have sworn I heard screaming, but it was hard to focus on anything right now.

For all I knew, I had broken ribs or a punctured lung. I’d never felt so sore in my entire life.

“It’s a distraction,” Alasdair bellowed. “Tune it out, Nora. Focus!”

I tried to drown out the roaring attractions. I knew there were innocent people on them, unwilling hostages powering the Leanansidhe’s portal. They were also human shields the warlocks would happily use to distract us.

Hunters, however, had rules. Those lives mattered. I couldn’t let my hatred of the Burning Hand drown out the need to save the innocent shields.

Unfortunately, the yeti wasn’t done with us. It bellowed its dominance and beat its chest. I could barely breathe; the thing had hit me so hard. Another one of those would knock me senseless.

As if the situation wasn’t bad enough, the park’s PA system roared to life.

“It’s the child, get the child. Kill the others.”

The words did what the yeti couldn’t. They hurt my soul.

I’d been operating on the assumption that the Leanansidhe had been sewing random chaos here as a distraction. But trying to work out her schemes was like trying to catch the wind.

They were after a child, and the sickening sensation in my heart told me it was one of mine.

Conor.

Why had I been so foolish? I knew my son was special, and clearly, they knew it too.
